2018 AMERICAN LEGION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS
Basic Criteria for Scholarship Awards:
The student must be a resident of Missouri. Applicants must be under the age of 21, unmarried and a descendant* of a veteran with at least ninety days active service in the U. S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines or Coast Guard, who received an Honorable Discharge for such service. A photocopy of the veteran's DD 214, discharge or separation notice must accompany the scholarship application. Any additional requirements for each scholarship are on the reverse side of the application.
Lillie Lois Ford Scholarship Fund - Two awards of $1,000 each are given each year. One to a boy who has attended a full session of The American Legion Boys State of Missouri or a full session of the Department's Cadet Patrol Academy. The second award is given to a girl who has attended a full session of The American Legion Auxiliary's Girls State program or a full session of the Department's Cadet Patrol Academy. M.D. "Jack" Murphy Memorial Nurses Training Fund - Currently one $1,000 award is given for two successive semesters, and may, by application, be extended for two additional successive semesters. This award is available to a Missouri boy or girl training to be a Registered Nurse, and may be used in their freshman or subsequent college years. The student must have graduated in the top forty percent of their high school class or have a "C" or equivalent standing from their last college or university semester. Scholarships are awarded for one year, payable $375 per semester. (Link to Application)
Joseph J. Frank Scholarship – Five awards of $750.00 are given annually to individuals who are descendants of a veteran. Applicant must have attended a full session of The American Legion Boys State or The American Legion Auxiliary Girls State program. Applicants must be unmarried, under the age of 21, a current resident of the state of Missouri and must use the scholarship as a full time student in an accredited college or university. Charles L. Bacon Memorial Scholarship - Two awards of $750.00 are given annually in memory of the first Missourian to serve as National Commander of The American Legion. Eligible are individuals who are currently members of The American Legion, the American Legion Auxiliary, or the Sons of The American Legion, or a descendant* of a member of any thereof. Applicants must be unmarried, a resident of Missouri, under the age of 21, and must use the scholarship as a full-time student in an accredited college and/or university. (Link to Application)
Erman W. Taylor Memorial Scholarship - Two $750.00 awards are given annually to a student planning on obtaining a degree in education, in honor of this Past National Executive Committeeman from Missouri. To be eligible, individuals must: (1) be a descendant* of a veteran who served 90 or more days of active duty in the armed forces and having an honorable discharge; (2) be a Missouri resident; (3) use the award as a full-time student at an accredited college or university; (4) provide a copy of the discharge certificate for the veteran on whose the application is made; and (6) submit an essay of 500 words or less on the subject: In your opinion, what was the most significant world event of 2015/2016? Shane Dean Voyles Memorial Scholarship - One $750.00 award will be awarded, annually. (1) Each school in the State of Missouri may nominate one student to be considered for the award. (2) The nominee will be selected on athletic, scholastic and leadership abilities. The nominee should be deeply involved in community and school activities. (4) Must use the award as a full-time student at an accredited college or university. Missouri PTA Teacher Education Scholarships are open to any high school senior in a Missouri public high school with at least one PTA/PTSA unit in the school district in good standing. Only one application is accepted from each school. The postmark deadline to apply is February 15, 2018.
These scholarships are awarded in May at recognition ceremonies and graduations. All scholarship applications must be submitted to your school counselor, not the Missouri PTA office. All scholarship applications should be turned into your school counselor by the deadline set by your high school counseling office. For more information on scholarships contact your school counselor.

Gabe Wilson, Charlie Phillips & Scott Bruenger Memorial Scholarship
Purpose and Amount: To provide an annual $1,000.00 grant to a graduating senior of Logan Rogersville High School; based on amount available to spend (ATS). Funds are to be used for education at an accredited university, college, or junior college, trade school or vocational/technical school. In the event the fund can provide two scholarships or one full scholarship and one partial scholarship, the Selection Committee is authorized to select two recipients for that year.
Criteria for Eligibility:
· Upper ½ of graduating class (GPA of 2.0 or better);
· Financial need and no other scholarship received;
Involvement in some type of sports activity during their high school
· Involvement in some type of sports activity during their high school career (baseball, basketball, track, football, volleyball, tennis, cheerleading, etc.);

Alpha Gamma Sigma at the University of Missouri - Columbia is awarding two $500 scholarships to incoming male students who will be attending the University of Missouri - Columbia, exhibit leadership potential, and academic achievement. One scholarship is for students pursuing a major in the College of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources, and the other is for students of any major.

This is a $1000 annual schorlaship is awarded to a student in each of MSBA’s 17 regions. Applicants are judged on the basis of academic performance, extracurricular activities and the quality of an essay. A statewide winner is selected from this group of regional winners and awarded an additional $1500.
How can a student apply for a Belcher scholarship?
The school board of each MSBA member district is eligible to nominate one high school senior to apply. The local board of education should select their applicant based on academic achievement and leadership abilities; need may also be considered. After the district applicant is chosen the student/guidance office should contact Matt O’brien for a link to the online application and form during the application period, October 10, 2017 – January 12, 2018. The applicant and their guidance counselor will receive confirmation and further instructions within two working days of submission. The student will need to obtain a transcript and complete the essay, if not already done.
This application and Checklist is for Step 1 of the selection process. It is intended to be used so that each member district of MSBA will have aid in selecting one candidate. Once the district selects their candidate, please contact Matt O’Brien to gain access to the online fillable application.

Arkansas State Privately Funded Scholarship Application-
I hope you had a great fall semester! We have now opened the link to the Privately-Funded Scholarship application at A-State. All students are eligible to apply for these scholarships each year. The scholarships are awarded by alumni and donors of the university. Each scholarship has different requirements, which are determined by the person(s) who donated the funds. Scholarships are for full-time students and require evidence of scholastic achievement and/or outstanding ability in the area of the award. Scholarships vary in amounts and duration of the award.
Arkansas State has made it very easy for students to apply for these scholarships. Simply complete the online application to automatically apply for all Privately-Funded Scholarships available at Arkansas State. Parents and students should be aware that being awarded a scholarship is not guaranteed, but it is an opportunity I encourage. The online application is located at www.astate.edu/scholarships and click Privately Funded Scholarships.
When you begin the application process, you create an account that allows you to log back into your application at any time to make changes or update until the deadline. It allows you to upload your student resume, letters of recommendation, and/or personal statement. The 2018 Missouri Courage Scholarship (MCS) application is open now through March 31st! Please help us share this opportunity--and the attached flyer--with students at your high school.
Since 2016, MCS has awarded over $25,000 to students who demonstrate courage in the face of adversity and who are dedicated to LGBTQ equality and social justice. The application is open to college-bound seniors graduating from Missouri high schools.

The Patriot Guard Riders of Missouri Scholarship is being offered to Missouri students who are sons or daughters of those who fall within the following categories:

(2) Those honorably discharged veterans who have passed after their term of service
(3) Those veterans or first responders disabled in the line of duty to the extent that providing an advanced education cannot be easily realized.

THE AMERICAN LEGION, Department of Missouri, during this school year, again sponsors an Oratorical Contest for high school students in Missouri. The purpose of the contest is to develop knowledge and appreciation of the United States Constitution, the ability to think and speak clearly and critically, and the acceptance of the duties, responsibilities, rights and privileges of American citizenship. The Legion contest is a partner with the National Speech & Debate Association, the honor society for high-school students (formerly the National Forensic League).
